During week 9 which we were being taught contemporary ethical issues. The main issue regarding ethics which was discussed is Clone. The very brief definition given by our lecturer is that clone refers to somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Another definition for cloning is the creation of a genetic copy of a sequence of DNA or of the entire genome of an organism. The first cloned mammal was a lamb called Dolly in 1997. After that many other animals like mice and cows were cloned as well.
The issue is human clone. Human clone has been one of the hottest topics discussed among the social activists. Some believe that human cloning is just a scientific process to help and enable couples who are infertile, so by using this method they could be able to have baby. On the other hand, some other argues that the process of human clone is completely interfering with god’s natural process.
I would like to reflect my own ideas and opinions over human clone. Despite the fact that human clone is a process that can be useful for infertile couples, we should consider the negative dimension of it. First of all, the process of human cloning is not an simple and easy process. It requires so much effort and time in order to clone a human being. As an example we can take Dolly (the clone sheep) which took approximately 277 attempts in order to be born as a lamb. Due to difficulties, complexity and average time taken by process, the human clone is very expensive and this is why most of the couples are not even able to pay the price for it. so, I think it is not fair to say that this process helps infertile couples, instead it is true if we say it helps only rich infertile couples.
Another reason which is given by some activists is that human clone provides homosexual couples with genetically related children. In my opinion, this is a weak reason. In many arguments, those who support human clone come up with this reason (homosexual couples) which is not a proper and good idea, because in arguments the reasons should be strong and logical which are acceptable for both side of argument. The idea of homosexual couples is something that the majority countries prohibit it and therefore, it cannot be a reason to justify human cloning. We can’t justify human clone with something (homosexual couples) which is condemn and prohibited in most of the societies and already requires justification for itself.
In conclusion, I would like to say that we all believe in god. We are all creatures of god and given so many abilities by him. No one in this world is perfect. We all have some disabilities. Some of us very little, some very serious disabilities. But we also have alternatives which are harmless. Human clone is proved that is not harmless. It might the clone child as well as parents and the risk of successfully doing it is very low. So it is better for all of us to choose other alternatives rather than human cloning.
