Democracy as a result of modernity

Today’s lecture, we had a class with Dr. Hamid, he explained about democracy. Firstly, it’s a system of governance that consists of four elements which are monarchy, oligarchy, dictatorship, theocracy and democracy.

Democracy is a form of government in which supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodic free elections. It allows all citizens to have equality in decision making that affects their lives. Democracy has its own basic elements. For example political system, active participation of the people, protection of human right of all citizens, and a rule of law which apply equally to all citizens.

Democracy political system it’s a competition for power and people can choose their leaders. It’s were a power flows from the people to the leaders of government.

Additionally, democracy is a result of modernity where modernity is a process resulting in a paradigm shift. For instance, what happened in Europe during the past four centuries? The expansion of waterways renaissance, French revolution and progressive secularization of society and more.

Lastly, democracy is the noblest form of government system we have had because people have the right of choice, practicing their own religions, choosing their leaders, having more independent and more advantages of democracy. However, recently, many countries are misusing democracy or over-democratic and as consequences there is war, conflicts and poverty and other issues. To sum up democracy is a very good government system if we only have excellent ability to use it.
