Abortion: Right or Wrong?

First and foremost, abortion is one of the most controversial issues in the world. Abortion is a medical process of ending a pregnancy so that the birth of a baby can be stopped. It is also referred as ‘termination of pregnancy’ by either taking medication or by having a surgical procedure.  Abortion is a very sensitive issue from the moral and ethical points of view, and there are a lot of proponents and opponents of abortions in the world. Many people around the world view in different ways. Some argue that abortion is very bad and that it should not be allowed at all. They believe that abortion is like committing a murder as it is killing the human foetus. However, some other people think that the parents should have the right to choose and it is not murder until the baby is born. Thus, my point of view is that abortion should be banned at all because it deliberately destroys the human life and it poses a lot of risks to a women’s physical and mental health. Thus, in our modern life, abortion and whether parents have the ethical right to decide if they use abortion or not, should be considered as an unethical issue.

To begin with, some utilitarian people believe that abortion is very acceptable because abortion can bring happiness. Since these utilitarian people look at the consequences, it seems for them that abortion brings the biggest happiness. For instance, a drunken teenager who accidently slept with some random boy she does not even know well and gets pregnant, it would probably be the right decision to abort because the teenager will suffer a lot from the pregnancy, the stress and the costs that will arise because of it. In fact, all these claims are only believed by those utilitarian people. In fact, the reality is the opposite way. This is because the child could bring happiness into the teenagers’ life and can add new live and meaning to her life. Additionally, humans cannot predict things according to the utilitarian people but it should be looked the ethical values behind the killing of the unborn baby since it has the same right as the living one. Thus, I believe that abortion is murder. I think that it is taking life from something that deserves a chance. As soon as the sperms meet the egg, there is a chance for life, therefore it should be treated as a live child from the point on.

Apart from the happiness of the mother, there are another questions that are need to be asked including ‘is a foetus a human being?’ Does the foetus has the right to live? Most of the supporters of abortion believe that foetus is not yet a human being so it is possible to be terminated. However, the opposite is true. Abortion is deliberately killing innocent human being which is completely wrong because a foetus is an innocent human being and it has the right to live. It is as a murder of an unborn child and it should be launched criminal responsibility to those who considered ethical and it breaks all moral norms and postulates on which most of the societies around the world are based.  I personally presume that abortion is murder but committed in a little more professional manner. According to the universal norms, murder is considered as the biggest crime of all, so why we should allow or legalize murdering since it is universally taken as the biggest crime

Advocates of abortion also believe that abortion is often considered to be an immediate solution that will lessen or relieve further trauma. However, abortion has emotional impact on the mother and the father which can be severe. Common emotional symptoms include sudden and uncontrollable crying episodes, deterioration of self-concept, disturbances in sleep and appetite, reduced motivation, disruption in interpersonal relationships, extreme guilt and anxiety, psychological numbing, depression, and thoughts of suicide. Additionally, longer term risks include an increased likelihood of deep depression and even suicide. To illustrate more, in a studies of women who became pregnant as a result of sexual assault, the majority of those who aborted their baby felt that the abortion had in fact increased the sense of guilt and shame they felt after the sexual assault.

Moreover, some people argue that abortion is safe and when induced in the developed world in accordance with their local law, abortion is among the safest procedures in medicine. However, as it can be seen from the results and statistics around the world, abortion can be considered as an unsafe procedure. For example, unsafe abortion results in approximately 70,000 maternal deaths and 5 million hospital admissions per year globally. In addition to that, an estimated 44 million abortions are performed globally each year, with slightly under half of those performed unsafely. Additionally, people that live in developing and less developed world, women facing the financial burdens and social stigma of unintended pregnancy and believing they have no other option other than abortion, will continue to risk their lives by undergoing the unsafe abortions that can endanger the life of both the baby and the mother.

Meanwhile, some abortion campaigners claim that abortion is indispensable aspect of women’s reproductive healthcare to terminate non pre-empted babies. They substantiate with the fact that many women get pregnant with unwanted babies, may be because they do not sustain a proper condition to raise children or else they are not mature enough to take responsibility, so abortion is the best solution and less suffering for babies and mothers. However, significant medical evidence shows that abortion is far detrimental in the long term; sometimes it causes permanent problems which endanger future pregnancies of women. It damages women’s reproductive organs because while doing abortion some harmful materials are penetrated through the women’s reproductive organs to remove out the foetus. The evidence shows that if woman experience abortion she is too vulnerable to several diseases such as ectopic pregnancies, infertility, hysterectomies, stillbirths, miscarriages, and premature births.

In conclusion, since there are many different factors and aspects that can be considered when an abortion is going to be done, abortion should not be allowed at all. Apart from the very few advantages and benefits that abortion brings to the parents that are willing to do, I believe that the negative effects to the mother as well as the society are higher than that by considering all the ethical dilemmas that it can bring such as the murder, unsafety procedures and other health risks. At last, I can say that there are other options other than abortion that are more useful and more save than abortion. Adoption, for instance, provides an alternative way to abortion that is beneficial to both the baby and the mother which can give the baby with, a warm, loving home.
